Permanent Nail Correction: Post-Operative Instructions

1.  When you leave the office, your toe will still likely be numb and will remain so for several hours.  When the feeling begins to come back take your pain medication:

Motrin / Advil  / XS Tylenol

as recommended, if needed.  If you are having excessive pain that is not relieved by the medication please call the office.

2.  Some bleeding is expected with this procedure.  If you have excessive bleeding that will not stop, please call the office for instructions.

3.  Beginning this evening, with the bandage still in place, soak your foot in a pan of warm (NOT HOT) water and vinegar.  Use one cup of vinegar for each gallon of water.  After a few minutes, the bandage will be loose and should come off very easily.  Soak for 15-20 minutes. Blot dry your toe, apply a small amount of antibiotic ointment (such as Bacitracin, Neosporin, etc) and cover with a fabric bandage.  Do not use plastic bandages as they will not allow the surrounding skin to breathe.

4.  Starting tomorrow and for each soak after that use Epsom salts instead of vinegar.  Use one tablespoon of Epsom salts for each quart of warm (NOT HOT) water.

5.  Continue to soak your foot twice each day, morning and evening until you are instructed to no longer do so.

6.  Your next appointment will be scheduled for 1-2 weeks from today’s visit.  If you are having problems before then, please call the office.

7.  Remember that by following these instructions carefully you will greatly aid in the healing of your surgery and help to ensure a good result!
